Rolling Paper Types : Rice, Hemp, Flax and Wood Pulp
Rolling papers are differentiated by fibre source, weight and processing. Fibre source gets the packaging space, but weight — measured in grams per square metre — is the specification that best predicts how a paper behaves.
Understanding GSM
Standard papers fall between roughly 12 and 20 GSM. Below 14 is considered ultra-thin; above 18 is comparatively heavy. Lower GSM means less paper material burning, which produces less ash and lets the contents dominate. It also means the paper is more fragile, tears more easily when handled, and is markedly less forgiving of an inexperienced roll.
Fibre types
Rice papers are the thinnest commonly available, typically 12–14 GSM. They burn slowly and evenly with minimal ash. Their weakness is handling: rice paper has little natural texture and can slip during rolling, and it tolerates humidity poorly.
Hemp papers sit around 14–16 GSM and have a slightly textured surface that grips well, making them the most forgiving option for most people. Burn rate is moderate and even. They are the default recommendation for anyone who does not have a specific reason to choose otherwise.
Flax papers are thin and strong for their weight because flax fibres are long, which yields a paper that resists tearing better than rice at comparable thickness. They are less widely stocked and typically cost more.
Wood pulp papers are the traditional and heaviest option, usually 18–20 GSM. They are the easiest to handle and the most tolerant of poor technique, but they produce noticeably more ash and can burn faster than the contents.

Bleaching
Bright white papers have been bleached, historically with chlorine, though most current manufacturers use chlorine-free processes such as oxygen or peroxide bleaching. Unbleached papers are brown or tan and undergo less processing. The practical difference in use is small; the choice is largely a preference about processing rather than a performance question.
Storage: papers are hygroscopic and absorb ambient moisture, which makes them limp and difficult to handle. Keep booklets closed and away from humidity. A paper that has gone soft can often be recovered by leaving it in a dry room for a day.
Gum lines
The adhesive strip is usually gum arabic, a natural tree resin that is stable and effective. Some budget papers use synthetic adhesives which can be inconsistent — seals that fail after a minute, or gum that remains tacky. Gum arabic is a reasonable thing to check for on the packaging, as it is one of the few specification details manufacturers state accurately.
